Elected Leadership Needs to Hear the Voice of the Business Community

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

From the desk of Jack Hornbeck, President & CEO of Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce

With the approach of the midterm elections, it is doubly important for the Hampton Roads business community to remain actively engaged with our elected leadership.

We at the Chamber will help you do so.

The Chamber provides opportunities for members of the business community to interact with the men and women who want to serve our region in Congress, as well as those who represent us in the General Assembly and here at home on City Council, School Boards and in constitutional offices.

We are presenting several forums in the coming weeks, some in conjunction with our Hampton Roads Business Political Action Committee. I encourage our members and other business leaders to hear what the candidates and elected officials have to say and take advantage of one-on-one opportunities to ask questions.

Demonstrating our commitment to working with our leaders and the leaders of tomorrow on issues that shape our economy, business environment, and communities, a forum is scheduled for Sept. 27, and it focuses on the Second Congressional District. U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye, the incumbent Democrat, and challengers Scott Rigell, a Republican, and Kenny Golden, an independent, are scheduled to address our membership and take questions. The forum is from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 27, at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott, 235 E. Main St., downtown Norfolk. Please call Candace Reid at (757) 664-2572 to register.

Additionally, we will bring our local congressmen together on Oct. 25 to discuss issues regarding business and other critical matters facing the U.S.

On Oct. 20, we will present our 7th Annual Legislative Reception, which brings our local legislators and businesspeople together before the General Assembly Session starts.  This has traditionally brought out more than 250 members from the business community and attracts elected officials from all five city councils and school boards as well as our General Assembly delegation.

Other important candidate forums presented by the Chamber in October include the Portsmouth Mayoral Candidates Forum on Oct. 14 and a forum with the huge field of candidates for Suffolk City Council.  For more information on these and other events, visit www.HamptonRoadsChamber.com.

We hope we will see you at these events, either bearing questions or simply listen. It is vital that our business community remains in communication with elected officials as we work our way through this challenging economy.

Again, this is part of the Chamber’s longstanding commitment to working with our current and future government leaders, at all levels while providing the local business community access to these decision makers.

We hope you will also consider joining the most powerful voice for business in our region, and make the strength of that voice grow.

Your support helps us ensure that the voice of businesses continues to be heard.

Jack Hornbeck

Chamber of Commerce celebrates SRC Campaign

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

A victory party was held Tuesday night at the Virginia Beach Convention Center for the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce and their Sustainable Resources Campaign (SRC).  LMX conference coordinator, Nicole Newsome, attended to offer her congratulations.

The SRC is an annual, time limited, resource drive for the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce.  The campaign utilizes corporate volunteers to involve members and the community in the Chamber through membership, sponsorship and advertising sales.  This effort raises needed cash and trade resources to provide programs, services and publications that best serve the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce membership.

LMX is pleased to partner with the local Chamber to offer a special discount code to its membership.  Likewise, the Chamber committed to support LMX with a Gold sponsorship.  Dedicated to creating economic prosperity and enhancing the quality of life in the region, the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce represents nearly 2,000 member companies that employ more than 280,000 working men and women.  Since 1801, the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce has been building a stronger economy and a better business community.

Visit the Chamber’s exhibit at Local Marketing Expo and ask how membership pays for itself!

To exhibit or not to exhibit?

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

As LMX has partnered with Pilot Media, Cox Media, Executive Lifestyle Magazine and other sponsors, another vital part of this event is the EXHIBITOR!

Tradeshow exhibiting can be one of the most profitable and cost-effective means for promoting your company and its products and services.  Ask yourself, would you benefit from having access to hundreds of business owners and marketing directors who are extremely qualified?  Remember, LMX attendees have paid a registration fee to learn more about marketing and how better to spend their marketing dollars.

If you are considering being an exhibitor, think about the potential new customers you may meet at Local Marketing Expo.  It is also an opportunity to strengthen bonds with current clients.  Exhibiting is a chance for your business to share special promotions and the latest innovations with the business community.  Exhibiting is a “hands on” experience with visitors to offer immediate feedback on your products and services.  Wondering if that new product is going to be well received?  LMX Expo may be a great testing opportunity.

Benefits of exhibiting at LMX are two full access tickets to LMX, company profile and link on the Local Marketing Expo website, and visibility from the event blog and social media.  Can you afford not to feature your business at the largest marketing event of the year in Hampton Roads?

The answer to the question is TO EXHIBIT!

Local Marketing – There’s an Expo for That!

Monday, July 26th, 2010

by Guest Blogger: Sonya Schweitzer, Boss Chick, Wave Marketing

Does your business sell products that will appeal to a broad, perhaps national audience? Or are you a consultant whose services might be appealing to a global audience? Have you ever tried to market to that mass audience? Unless you have a large marketing budget, or a large sales force, trying to reach the ‘masses’ nationally or globally, can be all but a pipe dream for most businesses.

Focusing locally allows businesses to refine their messaging to a more targeted audience.  There a number of methods to market locally – both online and offline. Print, TV, and radio are still reliable methods to reach a local audience. People still watch TV, and listen to the radio, and newspapers are still being printed and distributed. Companies like Pilot Media (who own a number of local news publications) will be in attendance at LMX to discuss how they are adapting and evolving to keep their audiences as more and more readers are relying on online news sites to deliver their news. I, for one, am really excited to hear about the innovative solutions they will be presenting.

Other offline marketing channels include direct mail, retail, signage, billboards etc. These channels still have a place in many marketing plans. They are also evolving, and if the ROI of these channels make sense, enhance your offline campaigns by adding online elements. You will see better response!

There are a number of online marketing tactics that can be used to support a local marketing campaign. One of the easier, and perhaps most effective, is SEO or “Search Marketing”. Fortunately for us novices, there is a panel of experts that will be discussing ‘search’ at LMX. Local search marketing allows a business to compete for keywords against a much smaller number of businesses, vs. a broader geographic campaign.

Email marketing, social media marketing and other online marketing tactics can also be highly effective in developing and then maintaining lasting relationships with your potential customers on a local level. Develop a strategic marketing plan that incorporates these tactics, and you will find your local marketing efforts should be more effective.

Taking a look at the speaker list for the LMX expo, we are very fortunate to have such an amazingly talented bunch sharing their knowledge with us! I, for one, am really excited and grateful to the LMX team for bringing such a wonderful event to Hampton Roads.

Sonya will be speaking on e-mail marketing at Local Marketing Expo.

LMX Speaker Breakfast

Monday, July 26th, 2010

The LMX team felt that involving all confirmed panelists in a brainstorming session was important to the cohesiveness of LMX.  With that in mind, the conference speakers and moderators were invited to a delicious breakfast at the PMS Deli on London Bridge Road in Virginia Beach.

After preliminary announcements, the panels met and discussed their specific breakout topics.  Moderators were present to meet and familiarize themselves with their speakers.  With the attendees in mind, ideas were shared on the expertise each participant would bring to their session.  The excitement and energy at the early morning meeting was evident.

By sharing their time and talent, the speakers involved with LMX have shown their commitment to the local business community.  If you are attending September 29th, you are in for an education packed day with national, regional and local experts.  If you have not secured your ticket, do it now!

LMX is appreciative of PMS Deli’s hospitality.  Barry Akers owns this ‘best kept secret’ in Virginia Beach.  The food was amazing, even the pastries are homemade.  Open for breakfast and lunch, you will not be disappointed in the quality or the portions of your meal.

Cox Media VP to keynote

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Another keynote speaker to add to the LMX 2010 agenda is Sharon Frazier, VP of Sales, Cox Media. Based in Atlanta, Georgia, Sharon is responsible for the overall strategy for television, online, and mobile advertising sales in more than 20 Cox Media markets across the country including Hampton Roads. She knows this area very well too, having started in 1996 as the Local Sales Manager of their Southside Hampton Roads’ team. She joined Cox Media’s corporate team in 2005.

We are interested in hearing Sharon share her marketing experience in Hampton Roads as well as other geographical areas. If you are a client of Cox Communications for home cable and internet, these services are the tip of the iceberg. LMX recently visited the Hampton Roads Cox facility in Chesapeake, Virginia, and was impressed. Their customer services, business services and media services are housed there and much more. It took close to thirty minutes to tour!

Did you know that Cox Communications is a broadband communications and entertainment company, providing advanced digital video, Internet, telephone and wireless services over its own nationwide IP network? The third-largest U.S. cable TV company, Cox serves more than 6 million residences and businesses. Cox Business is a facilities-based provider of voice, video and data solutions for commercial customers, and Cox Media is a full-service provider of national and local cable spot and new media advertising. Cox is known for its pioneering efforts in cable telephone and commercial services, industry-leading customer care and its outstanding workplaces. For seven years, Cox has been recognized as the top operator for women by Women in Cable Telecommunications; for five years, Cox has ranked among DiversityInc’s Top 50 Companies for Diversity, and the company holds a perfect score in the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index.

Don’t miss Sharon at LMX or the Cox Media booth at the LMX Exhibitor Hall!

LMX – a sustainable conference

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Local Marketing Expo has chosen Virginia Beach Convention Center, a “Virginia Green” certified & Energy Star Partner, as its venue. Virginia Green is the Commonwealth of Virginia’s campaign to promote environmentally-friendly practices in all aspects of the Virginia tourism and hospitality industry. The Virginia Beach Convention Center, which is anticipated to be LEED certified in the near future, recycles, composts and donates food, incorporates its own vegetables, locally grown and organic food into its menus.

In an effort to make LMX green, we are using eco-friendly signage, reusable name tags and water stations. We are encouraging attendees to carpool and to use the recycle containers while at the conference. Exhibitors will be asked to bring realistic amounts of promotional materials and to recycle unused portions rather than dispose of them. Lastly, our speakers will be asked if they would go “paperless” so we can post notes on the LMX website after the conference.

Local Marketing Expo is committed to become as environmentally-friendly as possible. Being a sustainable conference can make a difference in our local community.
