Emmy-award Winning Journalist & Independent Video Producer
Kathryn Barrett is an Emmy-award winning journalist and independent video producer who enjoyed a career in news broadcasting for more than 25 years.
Kathryn was WVEC-TV Channel 13's Medical Editor and news anchor until 2008.
The news veteran traveled to 10 foreign countries and covered 2 wars. During the war in the former Yugoslavia and the current Iraq war, she reported from combat tent hospitals, one of which was under mortar attack. She accompanied war wounded in an Air Force C-17 Globemaster flying intensive care unit from Iraq to Germany and then to Andrews Air Force Base.
The long list of notable people she has interviewed includes President H. W. George Bush, America's first test-tube baby at age 16, Dr. Mehmet Oz, Chita Rivera, Jesse Jackson, and Senator John Glenn, as he prepared to travel in space a second time.
Before joining WVEC-TV in 1982, she was an anchor and reporter at television and radio stations in Roanoke and several cities in Pennsylvania.
Kathryn is a graduate of Penn State University and has a bachelor's degree in Speech Communications and Broadcasting.
Kathryn's volunteer work spans many years and includes the Alzheimer's Association of Southeastern Virginia, where she is a celebrity "champion", Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, Operation Smile, Physicians for Peace and Chesapeake Care Free Clinic. She is a former board member of the March of Dimes.
Kathryn was named an Outstanding Professional Woman of Hampton Roads in 2004.
In addition to an Emmy award and second Emmy nomination, Kathryn's work has received numerous awards from the Virginia Association of Broadcasters, the Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters, the Association of Health Care Journalists and American Women in Communications.
Recently, Kathryn has "served" up another reporting style and was named 2009 Journalist of the Year by the United States Tennis Association- Mid-Atlantic region. Kathryn continues to be a sought-after emcee for community events.
Kathryn lives in Virginia Beach with her husband, son and cat Toby.
